Student Blog: Top 5 Tips to Cope with Exam/Study Stress

Studying can be stressful - especially when the list is as long as your arm. Knowing how to deal with stress can be half the battle as you need to know how to look after yourself. I have devised five tips that I always consider when I am feeling stressed.
Don’t let it get on top of you - I know how easy it is to slack off with studying, then the next thing you know you’ve got too much to do and you have no idea how you’re going to get through it. The first and most crucial bit of advice I can give to you is to keep on top of studying. If you keep ploughing through little by little it is far more manageable than leaving lots to do close to exams when you should just be revising! I always think of university as a full-time job, so I make sure I work Monday to Friday 9-5 so that I can have the evening and usually the weekend to take some time out.
Find a study buddy - Sometimes studying on your own can be a struggle because there may be concepts that you find hard to grasp. Having a friend who studies in a similar way to you can be helpful as you can teach each other, discuss and also encourage one another to study when you need that little push.
Time out - You need to know when you’ve had enough studying for one day. You need to look after yourself and when the stress is piling, there comes a time when you need to step back and just relax. Like I said before, treating studying like a full-time job allows you to incorporate ‘you time’ so that you don’t let yourself get overwhelmed. Overdoing it can be counterproductive and you need to be at your best.
Seeking help - Sometimes no matter what you do, you feel stressed and may not know the best way to deal with it. We are so lucky at AECC University College to have such fantastic support facilities. If you are ever unsure or simply need a chat about your stress levels, then there are Student Ambassadors, members of the Students Union’ and Student Services that you can visit who will listen, advise and provide you with some great solutions to managing stress.
Treating yourself - Sometimes, at the end of a hard week you need to just treat yourself. Get a takeaway instead of having pasta for the fifth night in a row, or go out with friends. That way all the hard work pays off and you can go out and enjoy yourself knowing that you have studied well. Having time away from studying is so important; it stops you burning out and helps keep your mood up, rather than feeling stressed! Even if it’s a simple trip to get waffles, or joining in a pub quiz with your crew, that may just do the job.
