What can you do with an Access to Higher Education Diploma in Health Science?

An Access Diploma allows you the opportunity to develop your qualifications. If you don’t have the necessary skills or traditional qualifications to study for a new career, an Access Diploma will provide you with a suitable stepping-stone into relevant higher education study.

Institutions across the UK offer a variety of Access to HE Diplomas, available in many different subjects. The courses are designed for people who have either been out of education for some time, or those who left school with too few qualifications to go straight to University, or those who wish for a career change. These courses will provide you with the knowledge and skills for studying at a higher level, so you feel confident and prepared for your next step.

When it comes to choosing the right Access to HE course, there are a number of factors you should consider such as location, career and long term goals, university courses, subject interests, study options and costs.

You may want to study your Access to health science course somewhere close to home, or you may want to experience what it’s like live independently somewhere new. Identifying courses that you are interested in across the UK is a good start, then you can weigh up if you’d rather stay local or go further afield.

Do you have a particular career or profession in mind? It’s important to find out the requirements for entry into that particular career. It pays to do your research, but you can also keep an open mind and explore your career options; there may be options you had not considered.

It’s not necessary to make a decision about the type of university course you wish to go on to study, but you should start considering the type of undergraduate course you want to study as soon as you start the Access to HE diploma. It’s also good to have an idea of the kind of subject area you are aiming for, or the subjects that most interest you. If you are unsure if the Access to HE course will provide suitable preparation for the particular degree or profession you are interested in, you can always discuss this with the course Access to HE provider.

It’s also important to research the costs of the course.

Case Study

Student Name: Dan Sullivan
Course: 2nd Year, Master of Chiropractic

Why did you chose the Access to Higher Education (Health Sciences) course?

After finish school aged 16, I didn't really know what I wanted to do with my life. I went to a local Sixth Form and picked subjects that I excelled at in my GCSEs. It took me 2 years of studying these to realise that this was not what I enjoyed and I desired a career in health sciences.

Why did you chose AECC University College?

I chose to study at AECC University College because of the facilities available to students and the options available after the Access course. The dry lab on-site was a big draw for me; it's great to have somewhere to study where you can be hands-on. This also applies for the on-site Chiropractic Clinic - having access to this really helped me achieve observations which were a requirement on the course.

What were your expectations before arriving, and were they met?

I expected the course to be a fun, new experience and this was definitely the case. Though it was tough, the course was very engaging. I had a high expectation of teaching before arriving due to the institutions reputation and this too was met. Tutors were supportive throughout the year and available whenever I needed a little help to understand a concept.

What did you think about your progression, what did you go on to achieve?

I graduated from the Access to Higher Education Diploma (Health Sciences) in 2015 and went onto the Master of Chiropractic degree, also offered at AECC University College. The Access course gave me a strong foundation to excel in the chiropractic course. The presentations we had to do as part of the course really boosted my confidence, which enabled me to become the Academic Officer on the Students' Union.

What is the best part of the course?

I really enjoyed the anatomy unit. It was great to be able to see the body in both digital form using software available, and physical form in the chiropractic clinic, wet and dry labs. This unit really helped build the foundation for my study on the Master of Chiropractic degree.
