University College Bids Farewell to Principal, Professor Haymo Thiel

On Friday 14 December, at a special event held on campus, colleagues, former staff, friends and family gathered to mark Professor Thiel’s 27 year association with AECC University College, and to wish him well as he steps down from his role of Principal.

Professor Thiel’s journey with the institution began in 1991. Many will have known Professor Thiel in his various roles over the years, from Senior Clinic Tutor, to Clinic Director, to Vice-Principal and finally his 6 year tenure as Principal.

During Professor Thiel’s time at the institution, he has influenced the education and guided the careers of over 3000 students. He has successfully achieved Taught Degree Awarding Powers and University College status, alongside securing a silver rating in the government’s first Teaching and Excellence Framework (TEF) awarded in June 2017.

In addition, Professor Thiel has also seen the diversification of course offering at the institution, with the launch of new undergraduate provision in the areas of sport, exercise and health science; and psychology. He has also overseen a series of improvements to the Parkwood Campus ensuring facilities are fit-for-purpose for students and staff, such as the Library Mezzanine and modernised teaching spaces.

Reflecting on his time at the University College, Professor Thiel praised the work and support across the institution, from both academics and professional services staff, who have played a crucial part in delivering the successes that have been achieved during his tenure.

The University College will be welcoming Professor Lesley Haig, who will become the next Principal in January 2019. Professor Haig is currently Head of Department of Allied Health Sciences at London South Bank University, where she established a successful undergraduate chiropractic programme. Professor Haig is also Lead Allied Health Professional responsible for the leadership and development of health science undergraduate, postgraduate and research provision.

From all the staff and students at AECC University College, we wish Professor Thiel all the best in his retirement, and our heartfelt gratitude.
