Sustainability Initiatives at the Forefront for Dorset Universities
AECC University College, Bournemouth University, and Arts University Bournemouth are three Dorset universities working collaboratively to put sustainability as a top priority for students, staff and the local community.
Fronting the initiative is Sustainability Champion, Wenona Dancy, who is part of AECC University College’s Students’ Union. The Students’ Union recognised the need to develop a Champion role to work on the concerns and priorities of the student body.
Rhianydd Haslock, Students’ Union and Engagement Manager commented, “It is important that our students have their voice heard, and where possible to act on the things that matter to current and prospective students. As a Students’ Union we are committed to working collectively for the common good, and making positive steps to ensure student interests are part of our strategy and are fed into the institution effectively.”
The Students’ Union are working with the University College to move forward on sustainability plans and guidelines to support green initiatives.
Sustainability Champion, Wenona Dancy, added: “Sustainability, environmental issues, and green living are constant headline issues at the moment, but these topics go deeper than that. They also affect our day to day lives. We have the choice to make a difference and to change how we approach this global issue. It is an issue which our students and staff feel passionate about, and as Sustainability Champion I am ardent that we support progressive change through educating people on this subject. We hope students and graduates from any of our three universities in Dorset will understand their impact, and that of their chosen profession, on the planet and be able to make educated decisions.”
Wenona and other Students' Union representatives are hosting a number of events, the first of which is an EcoBrick workshop on Thursday 7 February, 6.30pm.
