Student Profile – Andy Thomson
Andy Thomson is studying on the MSc Sport and Exercise Psychology course here at AECC University College. He tells us more about studying long-distance from his home in Scotland, why he’s enjoying the course, and where he hopes his Masters will take him:
Choosing a course
“I chose the MSc in Sport and Exercise Psychology course because of the opportunities that it gives you. It looked like a very professional place to come and I was really impressed by what I read about the course online.
“I work in the hospitality industry at the moment, but the current situation with the Covid-19 pandemic got me thinking about what it was I really wanted to do.
“I actually studied PE teaching at University, about five years ago. I really feel that Sport Psychology is definitely the route that I want to go down now. I would love to work abroad, ideally in America. There are some exciting opportunities out there due to the amount of money that the US invests in sport.
Studying at AECC
“I’m really studying at AECC University College. It definitely helps when you’re studying something that you’re really passionate about.
“All the classes so far have been absolutely tremendous and the online resources are second-to-none. The communication side of things has been great too.
“I’m a little bit further afield than most people, I’m currently living up in Scotland. It’s working well though, due to the great communication. I’ve been enjoying classes from here and I come down to AECC University College once a month on a Thursday and Friday and attend classes.
“The online library services are brilliant too – everything you need is just a click away. Everything is really well-organised.”
Course highlights
“There’s an Applied Practice unit next semester that I’m really looking forward to. This is designed to give us an idea of what it’s like to apply what we’re learning to a real-life situation. I think you need to really see things first-hand to properly understand, so that unit will be brilliant.
“I’m also especially interested in the Contemporary Issues class. I’m a football player and a lot of the issues have been related to football, which has been great. It’s been the same for Performance Psychology. Ana Soares runs that aspect of the course and she works at Southampton Football Club, so it’s been really interesting to learn from her.
“All of the lecturers are so heavily involved in the industry that they have lots of contacts in different areas. They’re always so happy to help. There are so many opportunities for students here and it’s absolutely fantastic!”
