Diagnostic Ultrasound
Ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves to demonstrate internal body structures. It is non-invasive, harmless with no radiation hazard and results can be obtained immediately in most cases. Ultrasound examinations are carried out to demonstrate the normal anatomy and pathology associated with body systems. For example, abdominal pains may be caused by the presence of gall-stones, back pains may be caused by the presence of an abdominal aortic aneurysm or kidney problems such as stones or obstruction to the urinary bladder. Ultrasound is invaluable in assessment of the well being of the baby during pregnancy. It is also particularly good at looking at muscle and a tendon injury caused by playing sports and is able to demonstrate blood clots in vessels, such as deep vein thrombosis.
