AECC University College works with the Royal Navy

AECC University College’s Professor Stewart Cotterill has an exciting new challenge ahead of him as he begins work with the Royal Navy. He will be responsible for supporting the education and development of service personnel, specifically relating to their psychological performance. 

Stewart is Head of School of Performance, Sport and Physical Activity at AECC University College and has over 20 years’ experience as both a consultant and researcher in performance psychology. In this role with the Royal Navy, he will advise on the further development and implementation of a focused training programme, part of which will seek to enhance psychological performance for specific groups of service personnel. 

Bringing a wealth of expertise and insight to the role, Stewart has worked across a broad range of performance environments and for a number of sporting clubs, including AFC Bournemouth, GB Sailing, England Cricket, England Athletics, and Somerset County Cricket Club. He has also worked in medicine, business and the performing arts environments. 

Commenting on the appointment, Stewart said: “It is exciting to have the opportunity to work with the Royal Navy and to help its leaders apply the core principles of performance psychology to further enhance performance in a military setting. We will be providing guidance and tactics, based on many years of research, that will help Service Personnel to cope and perform well under pressure”.
