Introduction to Language Support
The AECC is continually striving for innovation in the healthcare field and so we are proud to provide the Medical English courses for Speakers of Other Languages (MESOL) course. More and more health care specialists have specific academic and professional reasons for seeking to improve their English language skills - this could be for professional development, employment opportunities or simply general interest.
Communication is the most basic principle to good medicine. If you do not speak the local language you can have a top medical degree but you will not necessarily be a successful doctor. You may understand the terminology and be competent in discussions with colleagues but much of your time as a health professional will be spent talking to patients in situations where you need to be able to explain medical conditions and treatments in words they can understand. How can you help patients with an undignified procedure, discuss sensitive issues with varying age groups and judge how appropriate a light hearted remark would be in a particular situation? An effective communicative medical English course should provide solutions to these situations.
Because we recognise that healthcare professionals have busy schedules the AECC will be offering a range of courses to suit everyone. Note that normally you will need to have obtained at least IELTS level 6 (academic) to qualify for AECC medical English courses or prove your English language competence is at least intermediate level.
