Year 4 (Clinic Year)
During the final year of the course students become Senior Interns and work for a full calendar year treating real patients in our brand new teaching clinic under the supervision of fully qualified chiropractic tutors.
Each student is required to have seen a minimum of forty new patients and undertaken at least four hundred patient treatments in order to
complete the course. As well as treating patients Senior Interns are also required to complete rotations through the Radiography Department, assist with administrative duties on ‘duty days’ and undertake rounds with a consultant physician at Royal Bournemouth Hospital. Some Senior Interns also operate the satellite clinic located on Bournemouth University Campus.
It is also a requirement of the course for students to undertake community outreach work. This involves going out into the community and providing educational talks on various subjects including posture, keeping active and falls prevention at varying venues including sporting events, in schools and to community groups.
On entry into the clinic, students have already acquired the skills to care for a wide diversity of patient scenarios – what they do not have is the experience in providing that care. During the year the educational emphasis is on gaining that experience and attaining the ability to make safe and effective clinical decisions based on sound practice procedures and delivered with confidence. This ensures that graduates are well prepared to enter practice.
