Entry Requirements

You are here:

Entry Requirements

Before you can be considered for the course, you must satisfy a number of requirements including:

  • You must be at least eighteen years of age on 31 December of the year in which you enrol. There is no upper age limit.

  • You must meet the college's particular requirements for entry to the appropriate level of the course.

  • You must be willing to undergo both a police check (where available) and an occupational health check (if appropriate).

  • Interviews - UK and Eire

If you are considered eligible to enter the course, you will be invited to attend an interview at the college with either a qualified member of the profession, a member of the Course Team, or a combination of both. This will enable the college to assess your academic suitability as well as your motivation, commitment and maturity to cope with the demands of the course. When you attend your interview you will also have the opportunity to talk to both staff and students and tour the college facilities.

Interviews - Non UK

It is current practice that all non-UK applicants (excluding those from Norway, Denmark, USA, Canada and Hong Kong) are normally required to secure a letter of recommendation from their national chiropractic association before an unconditional offer of a place can be made. This may involve an interview.

In addition, and particularly in countries where no recognised chiropractic association exists, non-UK applicants may also be asked to attend an interview with a practising chiropractor or another suitably qualified health care professional in the relevant country.

Academic Requirements - A Level Qualifications

For entry to Year 1

  • Three A-Level passes to include Biology, Chemistry and one other academic subject (excluding General Studies) to a total of not less than 320 UCAS points (Grades ABB)

For entry to Extended Year

  • Three A-Level passes in any academic subject, excluding General Studies, to a total of not less than 280 UCAS points (Grades BBC)

  • Non A Level and Overseas Qualifications. These will be considered on an individual basis. Please contact the Admissions Officer for further guidance.

Mature Applicants

We welcome applications from those individuals over the age of 23 at entry who possess relevant qualifications and experience. In considering such applications a wide range of indicators will be assessed, including evidence of previous study and educational achievement, referees' reports and personal statements of reasons for wanting to join the programme. Mature students are not normally exempted from the minimum entry requirements specified.

For mature applicants, who do not meet our qualification requirements, we can recommend the following Access courses through the Open University:

  • S104 - Exploring Science

  • SK277 - Human Biology

  • SXR103 - Practising Science

  • SXR270 - Investigative Biology

Completion of these four courses would make you eligible for consideration for entry onto the Master of Chiropractic at the AECC and all should be completed before enrolment at the AECC in September, i.e. the end date of the course should be in June or July. To find further information about these courses contact the Open University or visit www.open.ac.uk. If you do not take up this course within the next year please contact us prior to enrolling to ensure of its current relevance. Please note, completion of these courses does not guarantee you a place at the AECC.

Graduate Admissions

Graduates in a relevant discipline may qualify for entry to the MChiro programme. All candidates qualifying for graduate entry will be interviewed to determine the suitability of their qualification. Graduate applicants should note that admission with advanced standing may only be extended in exceptional circumstances to those holding a registerable clinical qualification. Because of the unique nature of the College's MChiro programme, exemption from any part of the taught programme from the point of admission is not permitted.

The list below is not prescriptive, exclusive or exhaustive, but is intended to be illustrative of subject discipline(s) required of graduate applicants for standard entry to Year 1. Graduates with honours degrees should normally offer a minimum qualification of second class upper division (2.1) classification.

  • Medicine

  • Dentistry

  • Veterinary Medicine

  • Biomedical Science

  • Biology Science

  • Physiotherapy

Graduates in any other degree discipline may qualify for entry either by acquiring the relevant GCE A-level passes at the required grades, by acquiring other academic awards we deem equivalent, or by enrolling on our Extended Year Programme and passing all of its assessments.

English Language Requirements

If your first language is not English, the college considers the following qualifications/tests to be a suitable minimum level of competence:

Band 7.0 in the academic stream with a minimum of 6.0 in each of the sub-tests.

- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

Applicants are expected to provide a reference from a practising chiropractor who they know or have observed recently. The reference should be a signed letter on headed paper with an assessment your capabilities, potentials and, more specifically, the chiropractor's views as to your suitability for a course leading to a career in chiropractic.
