Additional Applicant Information

All Applicants

1. A personal statement illustrating your motivation to study and your basic knowledge of the subject area, (this should be approximately 500 words, or one side of A4 in length) and should contain details such as your contact with the profession to date; your views on the difference between chiropractic and physiotherapy or osteopathy, and why you have selected chiropractic as a career rather than the conventional medicine or another field of complementary medicine. This should be included in your UCAS application.

2. A non-refundable application fee is payable to UCAS. The amount payable is dependant on whether you apply for one course through UCAS or for the maximum of 5. Please see the UCAS website for information on current application fee rates.

UK applicants: Criminal Records checks are required and are done through the college, a fee will be charged once an offer is made.

3. All diplomas and/or certificates listed in the application form will be required at enrolment. If you do not have these, duplicates may be obtained from the relevant examining body.

Non-British Applicants Only

4. A Letter of Recommendation is required from the national chiropractic association of your country of origin (excluding Canada, Norway & Denmark).

Please notify the Admissions Officer at AECC if you are unable to obtain such a Letter of Recommendation, for whatever reason.

FEEDBACK TO APPLICANTS WHO HAVE BEEN UNSUCCESSFUL IN GAINING A PLACE AT AECC - UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMME

AECC aims to make its entry criteria and details of the processes transparent, clear, easy to understand and consistent. This information is readily available through the prospectus, the website or by contacting our admissions staff.

1. AECC assesses an applicant in an objective manner on the basis of the application form and will take into account the following factors:

  • UK APPLICANTS NON UK APPLICANTS

  • Level 2 qualifications i.e. GCSEs Equivalent Level 2 qualifications

  • Level 3 qualifications i.e A Levels or equivalent, obtained/predicted Equivalent Level 3 qualifications obtained/predicted

  • Interview Letter of recommendation from the National Chiropractic organisation, where appropriate

  • UCAS personal statement

  • Educational/Personal reference

  • Chiropractic reference

  • Satisfactory CRB check / Satisfactory National Police Authority check

  • Satisfactory language test

2. A COMPLAINT may be an applicant's concern relating to a procedural error or maladministration of the admissions process. This will be investigated by the Admissions Panel and an amended offer made, should this be the appropriate course of action.
An APPEAL is a request by an unsuccessful applicant for a review of the outcome of a Panel decision. If requested, an application may be taken back to the Admissions Panel for review. However, a revised decision will ONLY be made if additional or supplementary information has been submitted.

3. In many cases the reasons for rejection are straightforward i.e. the applicant has not met the required level of achievement or is not predicted to achieve the required level by their educational referee.
Applicants may be assured that their applications are viewed on the basis of an holistic assessment and academic excellence alone, will not automatically guarantee an offer of a place. As a monotechnic institution, AECC seeks to recruit students who have demonstrated a commitment to chiropractic and an empathy with people. This may be assessed via the personal statement, references and the interview.

4. Not all UK applicants are interviewed e.g. if an applicant's academic profile clearly fails to fulfil the required criteria or if the personal statement does not reflect an interest in chiropractic, an interview may not be offered. In addition, failure to respond to requests for documentation will result in the application being withdrawn, in line with UCAS procedures.

5. Whilst it is AECC policy not normally to refuse admission solely on the basis of a criminal record, applicants must be aware that they will be entering a primary health care profession, and that chiropractic is exempt from Section (4) of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (1974). Behaviour reflecting adversely on the profession such as dishonesty, indecency or violence, conviction in a court of law, or problems relating to alcohol or drugs, may lead to a refusal of first registration by the appropriate National Association or regulating body. It may equally well be taken into account later if the regulating body or the Association has cause to consider the conduct of a registered chiropractor. AECC has a duty of care towards its students, staff and patients and a responsibility towards its prospective students in offering places to those individuals who will, on successful graduation, be fit and able to practise.

6. Decisions are made by an Admissions Panel who will delegate authority to the Admissions Tutor to make straightforward offers or rejections i.e.
- where applicants have clearly met or are expected to meet the required criteria
- where applicants have not met level 2 entry requirements neither is it predicted that they will achieve level 3 requirements.

7. An audit trail for documenting the admissions process is kept for each applicant. This will include an applicant checklist identifying the reason for rejection, if applicable and if conducted, an interview checklist. Interviewers are faculty chiropractors or members of the admissions panel and are supplied with interview criteria and sample questions.

8. Feedback is on request only. Admissions staff will make every effort to counsel the applicant on ways in which they might make a future application successful, or on alternative programmes to which they might be better suited.
